    PMSM: principle analysis, the choice of high efficiency and stability

    PMSM (Permanent Magnet synchronous motor) is an advanced motor technology, the core of which is the combination of permanent magnet materials and the working principle of synchronous motor, this kind of motor mainly consists of two parts: one is the stator with three-phase winding, the other is the rotor with permanent magnet embedded.

    At work, when the three-phase electric power is fed into the stator windings, electromagnetically this creates a magnetic field that rotates around the stator over time. The direction and velocity of this rotating magnetic field correspond precisely to the frequency and phase sequence of the power supply. The rotor is fitted with permanent magnets which naturally produce a constant magnetic field. The key is that the constant rotor magnetic field will try to keep pace with the rotating magnetic field produced by the stator, that is, the axis of the two magnetic fields will try to keep in line. Due to the interaction between the magnetic fields, the rotor will be pulled by the rotating magnetic field and start to rotate. This process is akin to two magnets attracting or repelling each other, pushing the rotor along the direction of rotation of the magnetic field. But different from the ordinary DC motor, the speed of permanent magnet synchronous motor rotor and rotating magnetic field speed strictly match, this is the origin of the word“Synchronous”.

    In order to achieve and maintain this kind of synchronous state, the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) usually needs an electronic controller to adjust the frequency and phase of the stator current. This control strategy makes PMSM not only high efficiency and high power density, but also can provide constant torque output in a wide speed range, which is very suitable for applications requiring high performance and high efficiency, such as electric cars, precision industrial equipment and renewable energy generation systems.

    Because the permanent magnet takes the place of the excitation winding, the permanent magnet synchronous motor does not need the brush and the collector ring. The speed of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is directly and strictly synchronized with the power supply frequency, which means that the speed of the motor can be precisely controlled by adjusting the power supply frequency.

    This kind of motor can well withstand the sudden change of load torque, even in the case of large load fluctuations can be stable operation, instantaneous output torque is large, usually up to rated torque several times, suitable for dynamic load environments. Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) can maintain synchronous operation at extremely low speed and has a wide range of speed regulation. With no excitation loss, high power factor and lower stator copper loss, the overall efficiency and power density of PMSM are higher than those of traditional induction motor, which accords with the modern energy-saving trend.
